Twisting fabric

Boning of fabric
Boning supports the desired shape of a garment generally a corset and prevents wrinkling of the fabric

Gathering
Gathering is a sewing technique for shortening the length of a strip of fabric so that a longer piece can be attached to a shorter piece
Two types of gathering :
1.Pleating or plaiting is a type of gathering in which the folds are usually larger, made by hand and pinned in place, rather then drawn in with threads.
2.Shirring or gauging is a decorative technique in which a panel of fabric is gathered in many rows of stitching across it's entire length and then attached to the foundation or lining to hold the gathers in place

Introduction to knit

Ribs
In weft knitting, ribs consist of wales of plain and purl stitches. The various types include:
Derby rib: These fabrics consist of groups of plain and purl stitch wales of variable widths, particularly 6 3 rib
Fancy rib: These ribs may be made of bands of knit or purl stitches of varying widths, with patterns of stripes, purl stitches, floats, transfer stitches, with or without racking, or combination of many different possibilities.
Full Cardigan or fisherman’s rib: This rib is made in two stages repeated throughout the length; one course of alternate plain and tuck stitch, one course of alternate tuck and plain stitches (i.e. the opposite way to the previous stitches)
Full needle rib: All needles of both needle beds, racked a half pitch, knit on every course
Half cardigan or beaded rib: This rib is made in two stages: one course of 1 1 rib, and one course of alternative plain and tuck stitches. The two courses are repeated throughout the length

Cable Stitch
In weft knitting, crossing of several stitches repeated at intervals in the same wales.
A cable stitch is basically a pattern or series of knitting stitches producing a design like a twisted rope

Moss Stitch
In weft knitting, moss stitch is a basic purl fabric structure. It consists of one plain and one purl stitch (1 1 rib) alternating every course

Loop Stitch
A loop stitch is a basic knitting stitch usually made with the yarn at the back of the work by inserting the right needle into the front part of a loop on the left needle from the left side, catching the yarn with the point of the right needle, and bringing it through the first loop to form a new loop

Ladder Stitch
Ladder stitch is an embroidery stitch with parallel crossbars in a ladder like design

Learn the Ladder Stitch
·       Have the right sides of the pieces facing up.
·       Work in one stitch from the edge of the fabric.
·       Between the first and second stitches on one piece, go under the running yarn. Do this with a tapestry needle and matching yarn.
·       Repeat the previous step on the other piece.
·       Continue working from side to side.
·       Pull the yarn to close the seam every four to six stitches

Eyelet Stitch

An eyelet stitch is a good introduction to lace, they are easy to work and not as complicated as full blow lace.

Tribal

My first reaction to tribal was Africa, a country with a wide varity of tribal influeces...

The main things which i found stood out were:
  • Vibrant Colours
  • Simple shapes and interesting patterns
  • Masks
  • The spiitual approch to life
  • Their individual approach to beauty

Numerous patterns clashing together seems to be the biggest aspect of African tribal culture

Examples of African style paintings....vividly coloured and simple in style
female-warrior-african-art-paintings

Another aspect of Afriacan culture which intriged me was their attachment to masks and the spiritual connection that they have to them
Certain tribes beleive that these masks embody the spirits of there ancestor

The part of researching tribal culture which I found most interesting was there very individual approach to beauty and the vast difference between what is considered beautiful to them compared to the western world

Some of these practices are done not just for baeuty reasons but also because some of them have religious
                 relevance
Another place were an unusally approach to beauty is taken is China were women and young girls try to elongate there necks by wearing a number of rings around the neck. The older the women is the more rings she has

Electric

Electric
  • Bright lights
  • Crazy lines
  • Elecrtic Cable
  • Sources of electricity

I found the cayotic lines in many electrical patterns very interesting

Broken electric cables....By Richard Johnson
While doing my research i realised that there are many artist out there who that there inspiration from electricity and it's sources
Sarah Sze
Sarah Sze's DIY art has a heart

This is another artist...Irene Muller takes her inspiration from the smoke that's produced in explosive interaction with electricity:

Another example of her work that reminded me of fabrics
